Large wall art for a living room should span about two thirds the width of the sofa it hangs above, with the center of the piece at roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor. On a standard three seat sofa that means a piece around 55 to 60 inches wide. Going too small is the more common mistake.

Measure the sofa, not the wall. The sofa is what the eye compares the artwork against, so it sets the scale.
Take two thirds of the sofa width. That is your target width for the artwork, or for the full span of a multi panel set including the gaps.
Anything under half the sofa width reads as an accessory rather than a focal point. Anything wider than the sofa itself starts to look unbalanced, so two thirds is the practical ceiling as well as the target.

Center the piece 57 to 60 inches from the floor. That is standard gallery height and it works because it puts the middle of the artwork at the average standing eye level.
There is one adjustment worth making in a living room. When art hangs above furniture, the gap between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame matters more than the absolute height. Aim for 6 to 12 inches of gap. Less than 6 and the piece looks like it is resting on the sofa back. More than 12 and it floats away from the furniture and stops reading as a pair with it.
If following the 57 inch rule pushes the gap outside that range, follow the gap instead. On a low slung modern sofa the center may land closer to 55 inches, and that is correct for the room even though it breaks the gallery rule.
Both fill a wide wall. They do different things to the room.
One large piece is calmer. There is a single edge, a single subject, and nothing for the eye to count. It suits a room that is already busy with pattern, texture or a lot of furniture, because it adds impact without adding complexity. It is also the easier of the two to hang, since there is only one thing to level.
A multi panel set spreads one image across separate panels with gaps between them. It suits very wide walls better, because a set can span 70 or 80 inches without any single panel becoming unwieldy. The gaps also let the wall color show through, which keeps a large arrangement feeling lighter than one solid block of the same width.

That matters because the size ceiling is what decides whether a single piece is even an option on a wide wall. Above a 100 inch sectional, a 62 inch piece hits the two thirds target exactly. Below that ceiling you are into multi panel territory.
Two other formats trade width for height or the reverse. Panoramic wall art reaches 73 inches wide but only 24 inches tall, which suits a long low wall above a sideboard rather than above a sofa. Vertical pieces go the other way, up to 24 by 49 inches, for narrow walls and stairwells. Both are produced as canvas prints rather than framed.

Scale changes what an image does. A subject that works at 16 inches can fail at 60.
Subjects with depth hold up best at size. Landscapes, seascapes and wide horizons gain from a large format because the space in the image reads as space in the room. A big landscape makes a living room feel larger; a big close up of a single object can make it feel smaller.
Detailed images need viewing distance. In a living room you sit 8 to 12 feet away, which is enough for detail to work. In a narrow room where the sofa is 5 feet from the opposite wall, simpler compositions and stronger shapes read better.
Low contrast subjects are safer at scale. A high contrast image at 60 inches dominates everything, which is sometimes the point and sometimes a problem. Black and white wall art is the sharpest version of this and works best in rooms with restrained furniture.
For a room led by color rather than subject, green wall art is the most forgiving in a living room, since green already appears in most existing palettes.
Three things decide whether a large piece settles into a room or fights it.

Mark the exact dimensions on the wall with painter's tape and leave it for a day. A canvas photographed on its own gives no sense of scale, which is why art bought from a screen so often arrives smaller than expected.
