Four Moves, in This Order

Shape, layout, finish, size. Each move narrows the next, and none of them is a matter of taste alone. The artwork has a shape before you see it, the wall has a width before you measure it, and the room already knows whether it wants a frame. Make the moves in order and the piece chooses itself.

The artwork decides the shape, not the wall.

A wide landscape is horizontal, a waterfall is vertical, a coastline is panoramic and a botanical study sits close to square. Every piece here is offered in the layouts that suit its own proportions, so start by finding the shape of the picture you want, then see how it splits.

The wall decides how many panels.

One canvas reads as one calm statement. A set of three, four or five carries the same picture across more wall, with small gaps between the panels, which adds width and movement without adding a second subject. Long walls take sets. Narrow walls take one.

The room decides the finish.

A gallery wrapped canvas is the plainest and lightest of the three, a floater frame adds a clean edge, and a matted framed print is the most formal. Framed finishes are made on single canvases only. Every multi panel set is a canvas print.

The furniture decides the size.

Art above a sofa, a bed or a console should span about two thirds of what sits under it. An 84 inch sofa takes roughly 56 inches of art. That one rule settles most sizes, and the size guide draws every one of ours to scale.

Framed finishes appear only where a size offers them, which is the single canvas in the horizontal and square ranges. The figure is a reference body and the sofa is the US three seat standard. Nothing on the wall is enlarged for effect.

Thirteen Layouts Across Four Shapes

A layout is how one picture is cut for the wall: one canvas, or a set of three, four or five panels that hang with small gaps and read as one image. Each shape family has its own layouts, because a split that suits a wide landscape does nothing for a tall waterfall. Every diagram below is drawn to scale within its family, so a five panel set looks as much larger than a single canvas as it really is.

Horizontal Wall Art

The largest range. Landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and most painted work are wider than they are tall, and every piece in it is offered on one canvas or as a set of three, four or five.

Three Finishes

Canvas Print, Framed Canvas or Framed Print

The finish is the edge of the piece, and the edge is what the room notices. A gallery wrap has no edge to speak of, a floater frame draws a thin line around the canvas, and a matted print puts a band of white between the picture and the wall. All three are printed to order with archival inks. Two of them are made on single canvases only.

A canvas print is the artwork printed on museum quality canvas with archival inks and stretched over a solid wooden inner frame, so the image continues around the sides. No outer frame, no glass, nothing between you and the picture.

Every layout, and every size except the 30 x 20 single canvas, which is made as a framed print only. The only finish on multi panel sets, and on panoramic and vertical artwork.

Floater Frame

Framed Canvas

A framed canvas is the same gallery wrapped canvas set inside a slim floater frame, with a narrow shadow gap between the canvas edge and the frame, so the piece appears to float inside it.

Matted Print

Framed Print

A framed print is the artwork printed on paper and set behind a white mat inside a frame. The mat holds a band of white space around the picture, which is what gives it the formal, gallery look. It is the only finish with a mat, and the finish to choose if you have been searching for a framed poster.

Small, Large and Oversized

Size is the last move and the one most people make first. It belongs last because the shape, the layout and the finish each change what a given width looks like on the wall: a 48 inch single canvas and a 49 inch three panel set take the same wall and feel nothing alike. Settle the other three, then size to the furniture.

The two thirds rule: artwork above furniture should span about two thirds of the furniture's width, and its center should sit 57 to 60 inches from the floor, with 6 to 8 inches of clearance above a sofa back or a headboard.

The Layout for the Wall You Actually Have

Six walls cover most homes. Each one below states the width it wants and the layouts that deliver it, and every pick opens the collection with that layout and size already selected. The numbers are the two thirds rule applied to standard US furniture, not a preference.

Above a Queen or King Bed

A queen headboard is 60 inches wide, a king 76. Aim for 40 to 50 inches of art over a queen and 50 to 60 over a king, hung low enough to read from the door.

Common Questions

How Do 5 Star and 5 Pop Differ?

Both are five panel sets cut from one picture. In 5 Star the panels step shorter from the center outward, so the outline peaks like a star. In 5 Pop the center panel is tallest and the other four are one height, hung at staggered drops. 5 Star is wider for its height and 5 Pop is taller for its width.

Which Layouts Are Available Framed?

Single canvases in the horizontal and square ranges. Framed Canvas comes in 24 x 16, 36 x 24 and 48 x 32 inches, and Framed Print in 24 x 16, 30 x 20 and 36 x 24. Every multi panel set, and every panoramic and vertical piece, is a canvas print.

How Far Apart Should Set Panels Hang?

Half an inch. Every multi panel layout here is designed around a half inch gap, except 4 Square, which hangs on a one inch gap. Closer and the set reads as one canvas with cracks in it. Wider and the picture stops joining up across the gaps.

Should I Choose One Canvas or a Set?

By the wall. A set spreads the same picture across more width, so it suits a long wall above a sofa or a bed. One canvas suits a wall that is already busy, a narrow wall, or a room where a single calm image is the point. At equal width, a set reads as lighter and more active.

Do Canvas Prints Need a Frame?

No. A canvas print is stretched over a solid wooden inner frame with the image wrapping the sides, so it hangs finished as it is. A floater frame is a style choice rather than a requirement, and that choice is the reason the Framed Canvas finish exists.
