Alberta Wall Art

Alberta Wall Art

Alberta wall art is glacial lake country. Almost everything here is water the color of turquoise paint, ringed by snow topped peaks, and the recurring names are Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Peyto Lake and Maligne Lake in the Canadian Rockies.

Why The Water Is That Color

The color is the reason these photographs look edited when they are not. Glaciers grind bedrock into a powder called rock flour, meltwater carries it into the lakes, and the suspended particles scatter blue and green light back out. The shade shifts through the season, paler and milkier in early summer when melt is heaviest and deeper toward autumn. A canvas of Moraine Lake in July and one in September are not the same blue.

Moraine Lake And The Valley Of The Ten Peaks

Moraine Lake sits below a jagged skyline of ten summits, so the picture is busy at the top and intense at the bottom. It is the most dramatic subject in the range and the one that needs the most wall. Shots taken from the rockpile at the outlet are the familiar view; shots from the shoreline trade the peaks for reflection.

Lake Louise, Peyto And Maligne

Lake Louise is wider and calmer, usually photographed from the shoreline with the Victoria Glacier closing the far end, and canoes give it both scale and a spot of red. Peyto Lake is shot from above at the Bow Summit viewpoint, which makes it the most graphic of the four: a wolf head shape of blue against dark forest. Maligne Lake, further north in Jasper, brings Spirit Island, a small stand of firs on a spit with mountains behind it.

Winter Changes The Palette Completely

Winter versions of several of these exist and behave differently in a room. Snow removes the turquoise almost entirely and leaves white, gray and deep green. That suits a warm room which a saturated summer shot would fight, and it is the version to choose if the walls are cream or the furniture is walnut.

Beyond The Lakes

The range also takes in Banff and the national park, the Bow River with a freight train running alongside it, sunrise reflections, and wide panoramic crops of the Rockies where no single lake is the subject. The train pictures are the outlier and read as transport photography rather than landscape.

What Size Suits Alberta Wall Art

These are horizontal subjects almost without exception, so the piece wants width. Measure the furniture below the wall and aim for a canvas about two thirds of that width. Over a standard sofa that usually means a piece in the forties of inches, or a multi panel set whose total width including the gaps reaches the same figure.

Layouts For Every Artwork Shape

A panoramic crop suits Peyto and the wide Rockies views, where the interest runs side to side. A single horizontal canvas suits Moraine and Louise, where the peaks need height above the waterline. A multi panel set works well on the wide lake views, because a horizon carries across the gaps, and works badly on a tight reflection where a gap would fall through the subject.

Which Rooms Suit These

The palette is cool: blue, green, gray and white. That sits easily in a room with pale walls, oak or birch, and white bedding, and it is a natural fit for a bedroom or a north facing living room that needs calm rather than warmth. It argues with a scheme built on terracotta, mustard or heavy warm wood, where the winter and sunrise versions are the better choice.

Common Mistakes With Lake Pictures

The first is hanging a saturated turquoise piece in a room whose other colors are also saturated, which leaves the eye nowhere to rest. The second is buying small: half of a lake picture is atmosphere, and shrinking it turns the mountains into texture. The third is lighting, since a cool photograph under warm lamplight loses much of the blue it was bought for.

Pairings And Nearby Collections

Lake pictures pair with forest and mountain subjects rather than with other water, because two lakes on one wall compete. For the same water without the Rockies see lake wall art, for peaks anywhere in the world see mountain wall art, and for the rest of the country see Canada wall art.

How Each Canvas Is Made

Every piece is printed to order on museum quality canvas with archival inks that resist fading, stretched over a solid wooden inner frame and shipped ready to hang, with free shipping.

Common Questions

Why is the water in Alberta lake photographs so blue?

Glaciers grind rock into a fine powder, meltwater carries it into the lakes, and those suspended particles scatter blue and green light back to the viewer. The effect is strongest in early summer when melt is heaviest, and the color deepens toward autumn as the water clears.

What subjects appear in this collection?

Mostly glacial lakes in the Canadian Rockies: Moraine Lake below the Valley of the Ten Peaks, Lake Louise with the Victoria Glacier, Peyto Lake seen from above, and Maligne Lake with Spirit Island. Banff, the Bow River and wide Rocky Mountain panoramas make up the rest.

Which room suits an Alberta canvas?

A bedroom or a living room with pale walls and light timber. The palette is cool blue, green and white, which reads as calm rather than warm, so it works where the room needs quiet. In a warm scheme the winter versions in white and gray are the easier fit.

What size should I choose?

Take about two thirds of the width of whatever sits beneath the piece. These are horizontal subjects, so width matters more than height, and a lake picture hung too small loses the mountains that give it scale.

Are these canvases ready to hang?

Yes. Each one is printed to order, stretched over a solid wooden inner frame and shipped ready to hang, with free shipping. The inks are archival and resist fading.
