Ohio wall art is built on two river cities. Cleveland appears on the Cuyahoga River with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Lake Erie behind it, and Cincinnati sits on the Ohio River further south. The rest of the range is the swallow-tailed state flag, the state map and the Statehouse in Columbus.
Several pictures in this range show Cleveland's downtown skyline from across the Cuyahoga River, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's glass pyramid marking the lakefront in some of them. The building, designed by architect I. M. Pei and opened in 1995, is the one instantly recognizable shape in the skyline pictures. Others pull back further to show the skyline against Lake Erie itself, sometimes with sailboats on the water, which is a calmer picture than the close river views.
Cincinnati sits on the north bank of the Ohio River, and the pictures here are shot from across the water, so the skyline sits low on the frame with the river filling the foreground. It is a different geography from Cleveland's lakefront views, a river crossing rather than a lake edge, and the two should not be treated as interchangeable Ohio skylines.
The Cuyahoga and river reflection pictures depend on calm water to double the skyline underneath it, which is why they read as quiet, symmetrical images rather than dramatic ones. A steamship picture at dusk works the same way, with the vessel's lights repeating in the water below it.
Ohio's flag is shaped like a swallow-tailed pennant rather than a rectangle, the only state flag in the country cut this way, and it is nicknamed the Burgee after the nautical flag shape it borrows from. The vintage and standard versions here keep that shape; only the color treatment changes.
The Ohio Statehouse in Columbus is a Greek Revival capitol building, and the grounds carry a statue of President William McKinley, who served as Ohio's governor before the presidency. The state map print marks March 1, 1803, the date Ohio became the seventeenth state, in the same civic register as the Statehouse pictures.
A skyline reflected in water is a wide, low subject, so it wants close to the full width of the furniture below it rather than a narrow crop that would cut the reflection short. The Statehouse and lighthouse pictures are more upright and can sit at a smaller size.
The wider Lake Erie skylines and the sailboat scene are built for a panoramic canvas, which keeps the long lake horizon in one unbroken strip. The closer river reflections and the Statehouse work better as a single horizontal or square canvas instead.
A living room or dining space with some natural light suits the water pictures best, since the reflections need light to read rather than going flat and dark. The flag and Statehouse pieces are identity choices and sit well in a study or office instead.
For Cleveland alone see Cleveland wall art, for skylines from other states see skyline wall art, for state and country flags see flag wall art, and for the wider country see United States wall art.
Every canvas is printed to order using archival inks that resist fading, on museum quality material stretched over a solid wooden inner frame, and it ships ready to hang with free shipping.
Cleveland's skyline on the Cuyahoga River and against Lake Erie, Cincinnati's skyline on the Ohio River, a lighthouse scene, and the Ohio state flag, state map and Statehouse in Columbus.
Ohio adopted a swallow-tailed pennant design in 1902, the only state flag in the country that is not a rectangle. It is nicknamed the Burgee. The vintage treatment sold here ages the same shape rather than changing it.
Cleveland sits on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, so its pictures show a lakefront or river-mouth skyline. Cincinnati sits inland on the Ohio River, so its skyline is shot from across a river crossing rather than a lake edge.
March 1, 1803, the day Ohio became the seventeenth state. The print pairs that date with the state's outline in the same civic style as the Statehouse and flag pieces.
Yes. The Cuyahoga and Ohio River reflection pictures depend on some daylight to keep the mirrored skyline visible; in a dark hallway the water goes flat and the reflection stops reading. A living or dining room with natural light suits them better than an interior room does.
