Oklahoma Wall Art

Oklahoma Wall Art

Oklahoma wall art is almost entirely the State Capitol in Oklahoma City, shown finished and mid-restoration, alongside the state flag in several treatments. There is little scenery here and a lot of civic identity, so this is a collection bought for what a building and a flag represent rather than for a view.

The Capitol Went Decades Without A Dome

Oklahoma's State Capitol opened in 1917 without the dome its neoclassical design called for, because money for it ran out, and the building stood dome-less for more than eighty years. Several pictures here show the columned exterior from that long era, which is the correct historical view rather than an incomplete one.

The Guardian Stands On Top Of It

The dome was finally completed in 2002, topped with a bronze statue called The Guardian, a Native American warrior figure by sculptor Kelly Haney. The pictures showing a bronze statue against the dome are this figure, not a generic decoration.

Renovation Photographs Are Part Of The Record, Not A Flaw

A few pieces here show the capitol under scaffolding or mid-renovation, which is an unusual choice for a wall art range but an honest one: the building has been under restoration work at points since the dome was added, and these versions read as documentary rather than decorative.

The Flag Reads Differently In Grunge And Vintage Treatments

The plain state flag, a shield on a field of blue, appears here alongside grunge and vintage versions that age the same design with texture and a distressed border rather than changing its colors or layout. The shield itself carries an Osage warrior's rawhide design with a calumet peace pipe and an olive branch laid across it, adopted in 1925 to replace an earlier flag seen as divisive. A version on a hot air balloon and the state's map emblem round out the flag group.

A Working Oil Well Sits On The Capitol Grounds

Oklahoma City's capitol is one of the few state capitols in the country with an active oil well on its own grounds, a detail from the state's early oil boom that still marks the site today. It is not pictured directly in this range, but it explains why the capitol carries more industrial history than most state buildings.

Sizing A Capitol Dome

The dome and column views are tall, upright subjects, so a square or a taller canvas keeps the whole structure in frame rather than stranding the dome in empty sky above a wide crop. The panoramic capitol view is the exception, built to take in the full width of the building rather than its height.

A Panoramic Canvas Suits The Wide Capitol Views

The panoramic capitol print keeps the columned facade in one continuous strip, which suits a long wall above a sofa or a sideboard. The closer dome and statue views work better as a single square or vertical canvas instead, where the height of the subject is the point.

An Office Suits This Collection More Than A Living Room

Because almost everything here is civic rather than scenic, a home office, a study or a hallway gallery of state pride pieces is a more natural home for this range than a living room built around a view. The flag pieces work well as a gift for someone with a tie to the state.

How Each Canvas Is Made

Each piece is made to order on museum quality canvas, with archival inks that resist fading, stretched over a solid wooden inner frame, and shipped ready to hang at no extra shipping cost.

Common Questions

What is pictured in this Oklahoma collection?

The Oklahoma State Capitol in Oklahoma City, shown finished, under renovation and with its bronze Guardian statue, alongside the Oklahoma state flag in plain, grunge and vintage treatments and the state's map emblem.

Why do some Capitol pictures show scaffolding?

The building has gone through restoration work at points since its dome was completed in 2002, and this range keeps a couple of those honest, documentary views rather than only the finished building.

What is the statue on top of the Capitol dome?

The Guardian, a bronze Native American warrior figure by sculptor Kelly Haney, added when the dome itself was finally completed in 2002, nearly ninety years after the building first opened without one.

Is this collection better suited to an office than a living room?

Generally yes. Almost everything here is civic identity rather than scenery: the Capitol building and the state flag in several treatments. A home office, study or hallway of state pride pieces is a more natural setting than a living room built around a view.

What size suits the panoramic Capitol print?

The panoramic version is built for a long wall, above a sofa or sideboard, where it can run the width of the columned facade. The closer dome and statue pictures suit a square or vertical canvas instead.
