Patagonia Wall Art

Patagonia Wall Art

Patagonia wall art covers both sides of the border: Torres del Paine and its turquoise lakes in Chile, and Mount Fitz Roy and the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina. Snow-capped granite peaks over glacial lake water are the constant, with one glacier and one marble cave formation as the exceptions.

Torres Del Paine Is Three Granite Towers, Not One

Torres del Paine takes its name from three granite spires rising over Chilean Patagonia, and most of the wide lake views in this range are shot from far enough back to take in more than one of them alongside the water. Lake Pehoe and Lake Nordenskjold are the two lakes that recur most often beneath the towers.

The Cuernos Get Their Two Tone Look From Two Kinds Of Rock

The Cuernos del Paine, the horns of the same park, carry a dark cap of older sedimentary rock sitting on top of lighter granite, which is why the peaks in these pictures show a visible band rather than a single color running top to bottom. Sunset picks out that band more sharply than midday light does.

Fitz Roy Is Famously Hard To Photograph Clear

Mount Fitz Roy, on the Argentine side near the town of El Chalten, generates its own weather and is wrapped in cloud more often than it is clear, which is part of why it was not summited until 1952. The sunrise pictures here catch it under open sky, the harder and more prized condition, rather than the cloud it usually wears.

Laguna De Los Tres Sits At The End Of A Hiking Trail

Laguna de los Tres is a glacial lake at the base of Fitz Roy, reached by a trail out of El Chalten, and the alpine lake pictures here are shot from that vantage rather than from the town below. Laguna Capri, a smaller lake on the same trail, appears in a separate group of pictures closer to the peak.

Perito Moreno Is A Glacier That Is Not Retreating

Most glaciers worldwide are shrinking, but Perito Moreno, in Los Glaciares National Park on the Argentine side, is one of the few that has stayed roughly stable, periodically advancing far enough to dam the lake beside it. The pictures here show its blue-white ice face across open water, in daylight and in the softer light of autumn.

The Marble Caves Are Carved By The Lake, Not By Hand

General Carrera Lake, shared by Chile and Argentina, has worn a set of caves into the shoreline marble in swirling turquoise and grey patterns over thousands of years of wave action. It is the one formation in this range shaped entirely by water rather than by glacier or fault, and the panoramic version keeps the full curve of the cave visible.

Sizing A Granite Peak Over Turquoise Water

A wide lake and mountain view wants close to the full width of the furniture below it, since the color contrast between turquoise water and grey granite is the point and needs room to read. The closer glacier and marble cave pictures hold up at a smaller size, since the subject fills more of the frame already.

A Panoramic Canvas Suits The Widest Peak And Lake Views

The Torres del Paine lake views and several of the Fitz Roy sunrise pictures are available as a panoramic canvas, which keeps the full span of peaks in one strip rather than cropping toward the center. A vertical option suits Laguna Capri instead, following the lake and the peak above it upward.

Common Questions

What is pictured in this Patagonia collection?

Torres del Paine and the Cuernos del Paine over turquoise lakes in Chile, Mount Fitz Roy and Laguna de los Tres near El Chalten in Argentina, the Perito Moreno Glacier, and the marble caves on General Carrera Lake.

Why is Fitz Roy shown mostly at sunrise?

The peak generates its own weather and is usually wrapped in cloud, so a clear sunrise is the exception rather than the rule. The pictures here were chosen for that rarer open-sky condition.

Is Perito Moreno Glacier shrinking like other glaciers?

No. It is one of the few glaciers in the world that has stayed roughly stable rather than retreating, and it periodically advances far enough to dam the lake next to it before the ice breaks apart again.

Where are the marble caves in this collection?

On General Carrera Lake, a lake shared by Chile and Argentina, where wave action has carved the shoreline marble into turquoise and grey patterns over thousands of years.

Does a warm or cool room suit this palette?

A cool room. The turquoise lake water and grey granite peaks read as calm against pale walls and cool wood tones. A room already built on warm terracotta or rust tones is a harder match for this range than for a desert collection.
