Pennsylvania Wall Art

Pennsylvania Wall Art

Pennsylvania wall art covers two cities and a battlefield. Philadelphia appears with its skyline and Independence Hall, Pittsburgh with its yellow bridges over the Allegheny, and Gettysburg with a single Civil War memorial. The state flag, a typographic map and the domed Capitol in Harrisburg complete the range.

Philadelphia's Skyline Is Shot From Two Different Rivers

Philadelphia sits between the Delaware and the Schuylkill, and this range uses both: the Delaware waterfront pictures include the Ben Franklin Bridge at night, while the Schuylkill views show the skyline from the river's rowing course, a softer, greener foreground than the working Delaware waterfront.

Independence Hall Is Where The Country Was Argued Into Existence

Independence Hall is the red brick building in Philadelphia where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and the Constitution was debated in 1787, and the vertical picture here isolates its clock tower rather than showing the full building, keeping the focus on the one detail most people recognize.

Pittsburgh's Yellow Bridges Are A Local Signature

Pittsburgh sits where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio, and its downtown bridges are painted a consistent yellow, a color choice unique enough to the city that a picture of a yellow bridge over water reads as Pittsburgh before the skyline behind it even comes into focus. Three of the best known crossings, nicknamed the Three Sisters, span the Allegheny side by side, and the pictures here favor that stretch of river over the busier Monongahela crossings downstream.

Gettysburg Is The One Battlefield Picture In This Range

The vertical memorial statue here marks the 1863 battle at Gettysburg, one of the turning points of the Civil War, and it stands apart from the rest of the collection as the only picture built around a monument rather than a skyline or a natural feature. President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address later the same year, at the dedication of the national cemetery built on part of the battlefield.

The Capitol Dome Copies A Building In Rome

Pennsylvania's State Capitol in Harrisburg was completed in 1906 with a green dome modeled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, which is why the capitol pictures here emphasize the dome's shape and color rather than the building's footprint. The architect, Joseph Huston, toured Europe for inspiration before designing it, and the green dome complex shown here is the detail every picture in this group returns to. The state flag and the typographic map sit alongside it as the other civic identity pieces.

Bushkill Falls Is The Only Waterfall Here

Bushkill Falls, in the Pocono Mountains in the northeast of the state, is the single natural landscape picture in a range otherwise built from cities and monuments. The vertical crop follows the water's own drop rather than cropping it into a wider, flatter frame.

Sizing A River Skyline Versus A Monument

The Philadelphia and Pittsburgh skylines are wide subjects and want close to the full width of the furniture below them. Independence Hall, the Gettysburg memorial and Bushkill Falls are all taller than they are wide and hold up better at a narrower size.

A Vertical Canvas Suits Independence Hall And Gettysburg

Both the clock tower and the memorial statue are available as a vertical canvas, which keeps their height in frame rather than surrounding them with unused space on either side. The two river skylines work better as a panoramic canvas, where the width carries the picture.

How Each Canvas Is Made

Every canvas here is printed to order on museum quality material, using archival inks that resist fading, then stretched over a solid wooden inner frame and shipped ready to hang with free shipping.

Common Questions

What does this Pennsylvania collection cover?

Philadelphia's skyline on the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers with Independence Hall, Pittsburgh's skyline and yellow bridges over the Allegheny, a Gettysburg battlefield memorial, Bushkill Falls, and the Pennsylvania state flag, map and Capitol.

Why are Pittsburgh's bridges yellow?

The city paints its downtown bridges a consistent yellow, a signature color scheme distinctive enough that it reads as Pittsburgh on sight. Several bridges over the Allegheny and Monongahela share the same treatment.

What happened at Independence Hall?

The Declaration of Independence was adopted there in 1776 and the United States Constitution was debated and signed there in 1787. The clock tower shown in this range is the building's most recognized detail.

Does the Capitol or the skyline suit a study better?

The Capitol, the state flag and the typographic map suit a study or hallway, where their civic detail rewards a closer look. The two river skylines are brighter, wider subjects and work better in a living room or entryway.

What does the Pennsylvania Capitol dome resemble?

St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The Harrisburg capitol, completed in 1906, copied the Basilica's dome shape and gave it a distinctive green color, which the pictures in this range keep as the focus.
