Prague Wall Art

Prague Wall Art

Prague wall art is built almost entirely on the Vltava River: Charles Bridge crossing it, Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral above it, and the Old Town's Tyn Church and squares along its banks. Night, sunset and winter versions of the same handful of landmarks make up most of the range.

Charles Bridge Has Carried People Across The Vltava Since The 1300s

Construction on Charles Bridge began in 1357 under Emperor Charles IV, and the pedestrian crossing is lined with thirty baroque statues added centuries later. At just over 500 meters long, it was for centuries the only way to cross the Vltava on foot, and nearly every picture in this range that shows the river includes the bridge somewhere in frame, whether the shot is taken from the bridge itself or looking back at it from the bank.

Prague Castle Is The Largest Ancient Castle Complex On Record

Prague Castle holds the Guinness World Record for the largest ancient castle complex still standing, and it has housed the Crown Jewels of Bohemia for centuries. The pictures here show it rising above the Vltava at sunset and lit at night, usually with the bridge or the river in the same frame rather than the castle isolated on its own.

St Vitus Cathedral Took Nearly Six Centuries To Finish

St Vitus Cathedral sits inside the castle grounds and took from 1344 to 1929 to complete, a span that crosses Gothic, Baroque and modern building periods, though its exterior still reads as unified Gothic stonework. The vertical pictures here follow its twin spires up rather than showing the castle grounds around it.

Tyn Church's Twin Spires Mark The Old Town Square

The Church of Our Lady before Tyn, begun in the 14th century, is the building most pictures of Old Town Square are framed around, its two dark spires rising above the square's pastel facades. The green copper dome pictures nearby belong to a different building, part of the Old Town's rooftops rather than the church itself.

Night And Winter Change The Same Handful Of Views

Several of the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle pictures repeat the same composition across different conditions: night lighting, a winter dusting of snow, and New Year fireworks over the river. Each version changes the mood of an otherwise familiar view rather than showing a new location.

Wenceslas Square Is A Street, Not A Square

Despite its name, Wenceslas Square is a long boulevard rather than a traditional plaza, and the pictures here show it filled with people at night, a busier, more modern scene than the historic river and castle views that make up most of the range. It was also the site of the mass protests that helped end Communist rule in Czechoslovakia in 1989, a layer of history the night crowd scene does not spell out but the square carries anyway.

Sizing A River Bridge Or A Castle Skyline

A wide river view, whether Charles Bridge or the full castle skyline, wants close to the full width of the furniture below it, since the composition depends on the river's horizontal sweep. The vertical cathedral and church tower pictures hold up at a narrower size instead.

The River Calls For Width, The Cathedral For Height

The river and skyline views suit a panoramic canvas, keeping the Vltava's width in one unbroken strip. St Vitus Cathedral and the Old Town bridge tower are available as a vertical canvas, which follows their own height rather than cropping it away.

Common Questions

What is pictured in this Prague collection?

Charles Bridge over the Vltava River, Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral, Tyn Church and Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square at night, and river views of the Old Town in changing light and seasons.

How old is Charles Bridge?

Construction began in 1357 under Emperor Charles IV. The thirty baroque statues that line it today were added later, mostly from the late 1600s onward.

What makes Prague Castle unusual?

Guinness World Records lists it as the largest ancient castle complex still standing. St Vitus Cathedral, inside the castle grounds, took nearly six centuries to complete, from 1344 to 1929.

Is Wenceslas Square an actual square?

Not in shape. It is a long boulevard rather than a traditional plaza, despite the name, which is why the night picture in this range reads more like a busy street scene than a historic square.

Does the river view or the cathedral suit a narrower wall?

The cathedral. St Vitus Cathedral and the Old Town bridge tower are shot as vertical compositions, so they suit a narrow wall, a stairwell or the space beside a doorway. The river and skyline views need width to work and belong on a longer wall instead.
