Sicily Wall Art

Sicily wall art runs on ancient stone and one active volcano. The Valley of the Temples near Agrigento and the hillside theater at Taormina account for most of the range, Mount Etna supplies the drama, and Cefalu adds the only real color break in an otherwise sunbaked palette.

The Valley Of The Temples Is Greek, Not Roman

The columned ruins near Agrigento are Greek temples from the fifth century BC, built when the city was the Greek colony of Akragas, not Roman work from a later period. The best preserved is the Temple of Concordia, still standing nearly whole, while the Temple of Juno higher on the ridge shows more damage. Both are shot in the low light of early morning or late afternoon, when the stone turns gold.

Taormina's Theater Still Faces The Sea

The ancient theater at Taormina was built into a hillside by the Greeks and later expanded by the Romans, and it still frames the Ionian Sea beyond its ruined stage wall, with Mount Etna visible on a clear day. The sunset versions here catch the stone glowing orange with the water behind it, which is the single most photographed view on the whole island.

Mount Etna Appears Both Erupting And Calm

Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe, and this range includes it two ways: mid eruption, with a glowing plume against a dark sky, and dormant, sitting quietly behind a farmhouse and its fields. The two versions suit very different rooms, since one is a dramatic focal point and the other is closer to a pastoral landscape.

Cefalu Supplies The Color In This Range

Cefalu is a coastal town on Sicily's north shore, and the print here shows its stacked colorful buildings against the water below the cliff known as La Rocca. Next to the sandstone tones of the temples and the theater, this is the one piece that reads as bright rather than warm, and it works as a counterpoint hung near the others rather than instead of them.

Palermo's Cathedral Carries The Vertical Shapes

Several prints in this range are shot straight up at the towers of Palermo's cathedral or at a domed church elsewhere on the island, and these are the tallest, narrowest crops in the collection. They suit a stairwell, a hallway or the gap beside a window in a way the wide temple and theater shots cannot.

A Warm Palette Runs Through Nearly Every Piece

Outside of the Cefalu print and the eruption shot, almost everything here sits in a narrow band of gold, ochre and warm gray, since the subject is either sunbaked stone or a sunset sky. That makes the range easy to hang as a group, since the pieces share a temperature even when the subjects differ, and a set of two or three from different subjects still reads as one coherent wall rather than a mismatched collection.

The Temple And Theater Views Want Width

Both the Valley of the Temples and the Taormina theater are shot from a distance to fit the whole ruin plus its landscape into one frame, so a wide horizontal or panoramic canvas keeps that context intact. The Palermo cathedral towers and the Etna eruption shot are closer, vertical subjects and hold up at a narrower size, since neither depends on a wide horizon to make sense.

Pairing Ancient Stone With A Modern Room

These prints work best against plain walls and simple furniture, since the detail in the stonework already carries visual weight and competes with a busy room. A pale or neutral wall lets the columns and archways read clearly, where a patterned wallpaper would fight them for attention.

How Each Canvas Is Made

Each canvas is printed to order on museum quality material with archival inks that resist fading, then stretched over a solid wooden inner frame and shipped ready to hang, with free shipping.

Common Questions

What does Sicily wall art usually depict?

Ancient Greek ruins, mainly the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento and the theater at Taormina, alongside Mount Etna and the coastal town of Cefalu. A smaller set covers Palermo's cathedral and other church domes.

Are the temples in this collection Greek or Roman?

Greek. They were built in the fifth century BC when Agrigento was the Greek colony of Akragas. The Temple of Concordia is the best preserved; the Temple of Juno nearby shows more damage.

Is Mount Etna still an active volcano?

Yes, it is the tallest active volcano in Europe, and this range includes it both mid eruption and calm behind a farmhouse. The two versions suit different rooms depending on how dramatic a focal point you want.

What size suits a Valley of the Temples print?

Take about two thirds of the width of the furniture below the wall. These are wide, distant subjects, so a horizontal or panoramic canvas carries the scene better than a small or narrow one.

Which room suits a Sicily canvas?

A room with plain walls and simple furniture, since the stonework in these prints already carries detail and competes with a busy pattern. Neutral walls let the columns and archways read clearly.
