What Mpix is and what it sells

Mpix says it has been family owned since 2003 and that its canvas prints are color checked, printed, wrapped, assembled and packaged at its own lab in Pittsburg, Kansas. Its home page sorts the range into photo books and albums, photo prints, wall art, cards, calendars, photo gifts and tabletop displays. The wall art group covers canvas, framed prints, metal prints and wood prints.

A photo lab takes a phone photo and returns it as almost any product, and canvas is one line among many. A canvas seller is built around a different job, which is why the comparison below splits by job rather than by score.

What the Mpix canvas offer says

The canvas prints page is specific. This table adds nothing to what it states.

Two rows matter most for a wall. The depth is 1.5 inches, and the ladder tops out at 40x60, which is large for a single canvas. Anything wider, or any shape between the standard sizes, is outside the offer.

What the lab does well

The strongest point is the color review. Mpix says its color technicians look at every image and make small adjustments to density, color and contrast on monitors calibrated to its printers, and that the step can be switched off with a "Do Not Color Correct" option. For a phone photo with uneven exposure, a person looking at the file before it prints is a real service, and it is the part of a photo lab that a pure canvas seller rarely offers.

The second is range. Photo prints run from wallet size to 24x36 inches in over 30 sizes, on E-Surface or metallic paper, and the page says the lab prints and ships them within one business day. Giclee prints come on five papers. For a batch of paper prints, an album or a card, that is home ground, and a different job from hanging one large canvas.

The third is candor. The page states its own limits: no custom sizes, a warning against high humidity, and a plain note that screenshots and social media photos print badly because the files are compressed. Its upload tool warns when a file is too small for the size chosen. A seller that publishes where its product stops is easier to compare than one that does not.

Where the Mpix canvas stops

No custom size. Mpix says its printers print to the aspect ratio of the standard sizes, and that every file is cropped to fit, with a red crop box showing the result.

No multi panel set. The canvas pages list single canvases, float frames and canvas collage templates, which put several photos on one canvas. We read no set of separate panels that join into one picture, so a three, four or five panel layout is not part of the published offer.

No humidity. Mpix says its canvas is not designed for high humidity because the wood frame can warp, and points to metal prints for a bathroom or kitchen. Check the same line on any wood framed canvas you compare.

The remake policy is conditional. Mpix says that if you are not happy with the quality of an order, you should contact it within 30 days of purchase and it will reprint the order free. It also says exact color match from order to order cannot be guaranteed, that it is not responsible for poor results from low resolution, and that altering a product after delivery ends the free reprint. That is a reprint guarantee, not a change of mind return.

Offers change. Open the canvas prints page, the help FAQ and the shipping page on the Mpix site, and check four things: the size list, the depth, the production time and the remake terms.
