Contemporary Expressionism in Art, Explained

Contemporary expressionism is painting made today that puts emotional truth ahead of visual accuracy. It distorts color, form and proportion on purpose, keeps the marks of the artist's hand visible, and treats how something felt as more important than how it looked.

It is the current stage of a line that runs from Edvard Munch through German Expressionism, American Abstract Expressionism and the Neo-Expressionist revival of the 1980s. Those four names get used interchangeably and mean different things, so the table below separates them first.

Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism: what is the difference?

These are four distinct movements separated by period, place and intent.

Movement When Where Defining trait
Expressionism c. 1905 to 1920s Germany and Austria Distorted figures and harsh color to convey anxiety and inner state
Abstract Expressionism 1940s to 1950s New York Emotion without subject matter; scale, gesture and field
Neo-Expressionism Late 1970s to 1980s Germany, Italy, United States Return to the figure and to painting, against minimalism
Contemporary expressionism 1990s to now International Expressive mark making with mixed media and no single manifesto

The short version: Expressionism distorts the figure. Abstract Expressionism removes it. Neo-Expressionism brings it back. Contemporary expressionism inherits all three and is not organized as a movement.

Where did expressionism begin?

German Expressionism has two founding groups, and neither was a single style.

Die Brücke, meaning The Bridge, formed in Dresden in 1905 around Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. They worked in harsh, unmixed color and angular figures, drawing on woodcut traditions and non-Western carving.

Der Blaue Reiter, The Blue Rider, formed in Munich in 1911 around Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. This group was more spiritual and more theoretical, and it pushed toward abstraction rather than toward distorted figuration.

Austria produced a parallel strand in Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, whose portraits push anatomy into raw psychological territory.

Is Van Gogh an expressionist?

No, but he is the single most important precursor.

Vincent van Gogh died in 1890, fifteen years before Die Brücke formed, so he cannot belong to a movement that did not exist. What makes the question reasonable is that he was doing the essential expressionist thing already: using color and brushwork to carry feeling rather than to describe appearance. The thickly loaded, directional strokes in his late work were a direct influence on the German painters who followed.

Art historians usually call him a Post-Impressionist and a proto-expressionist. The Starry Night is the clearest demonstration: the sky is not what he saw, it is what he felt about what he saw.

Who is considered the father of expressionism?

Edvard Munch is the name most often given, and it comes with the same caveat as Van Gogh.

The Norwegian painter was working in the 1890s, before the movement was named, and his own affiliation was with Symbolism. His influence on the German Expressionists was direct and acknowledged, which is why the title stuck. Some accounts give the role to Van Gogh instead, and there is no settled answer, because a precursor is a matter of interpretation rather than membership.

What is the most famous expressionist artwork?

The Scream by Edvard Munch, first painted in 1893, with several versions made through 1910 in different media.

It is worth noting that it is technically a precursor rather than an Expressionist work, for the reason above. It is also frequently misread. The figure is not screaming. Munch's own note describes hearing an enormous scream pass through nature while he stood on a bridge, and the figure is reacting to it, hands over the ears.

What is neo-expressionism?

Neo-Expressionism was the return of large, emotional, figurative painting in the late 1970s and 1980s, and it was a deliberate reaction.

Through the 1960s and 1970s minimalism and conceptual art had pushed painting toward the margins as something exhausted and sentimental. Neo-Expressionist painters rejected that, working large, fast, roughly and with recognizable subjects again.

It appeared in several countries at once. In Germany, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer and Jörg Immendorff, with Baselitz painting his subjects inverted from 1969 onward so the image resists being read as a picture. In Italy, the Transavanguardia group including Francesco Clemente and Sandro Chia. In the United States, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel and David Salle.

Basquiat, who worked from the late 1970s until his death in 1988, is the figure who connects the movement to graffiti, hip hop and street culture in New York, and he remains its most widely recognized name.

Who are contemporary expressionist painters now?

There is no membership list, because contemporary expressionism is a tendency rather than an organized movement with a manifesto.

Painters frequently discussed in this context include Robert Nava, whose work uses deliberately crude, childlike figures and mythic creatures, and Jordy Kerwick, known for dense still lifes and animals in saturated color. Cecily Brown works the gestural, half-figurative territory between abstraction and the body. What they share is not a style but a priority: the painting records an act and a feeling rather than delivering a finished image.

Institutional definitions are worth consulting directly. Tate and the Guggenheim both maintain public entries on Neo-Expressionism that set out the movement's boundaries more strictly than most secondary writing does.

How do you recognize an expressionist painting?

Five signals, and you rarely need more than three.

Visible brushwork. The marks are not blended away. You can see the direction, speed and pressure of each stroke, often in thick impasto that stands off the surface.

Non-naturalistic color. A face may be green, a sky red. Color is chosen for emotional effect, not accuracy.

Distorted form. Proportion and perspective are bent deliberately. Figures elongate, faces flatten, space refuses to recede properly.

Compressed or ambiguous space. Foreground and background collapse toward the picture plane rather than opening into depth.

Evidence of speed. Drips, scrapes, visible corrections and unfinished passages are left in as part of the record rather than tidied away.

These are all decisions about the elements of art, particularly color, line and space, pushed past the point where they describe and into the point where they express.

Does expressionist art work in a home?

It does, and it behaves differently from most wall art, so it is worth knowing what you are taking on.

It needs to be the loudest thing in the room. An expressionist painting carries high contrast and strong color, so it competes with patterned furnishings and busy walls. Give it a plain wall and let it win.

It needs distance. Gestural work resolves from across a room and dissolves into marks up close. A hallway or a corner with no viewing distance wastes it.

It suits calm rooms, not calm walls. The contrast between a quiet, neutral interior and one charged painting is the whole effect. Pairing expressive work with an equally busy room cancels both.

Scale matters more than usual. These paintings were mostly made large, and shrinking a gestural composition to a small print flattens the energy that justified it. If you go expressionist, go big.

To browse in this territory, abstract wall art covers the gestural and non-figurative end, contemporary wall art the broader current field, and colorful wall art the saturated palettes the style depends on. For arranging a strong piece against others, see the seven principles of art.

Common Questions

What is contemporary expressionism?

Contemporary expressionism is painting made today that prioritizes emotional truth over visual accuracy. It distorts color, form and proportion deliberately, keeps the artist's mark visible through heavy brushwork and mixed media, and descends from German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and the Neo-Expressionist revival of the 1980s. It is a tendency rather than an organized movement.

What is the difference between expressionism and abstract expressionism?

Expressionism, in Germany and Austria from about 1905, distorted recognizable figures and used harsh color to convey inner states. Abstract Expressionism, in New York in the 1940s and 1950s, removed the subject entirely and carried emotion through scale, gesture and fields of color. One distorts the figure; the other abandons it.

Is Van Gogh an expressionist?

No. Van Gogh died in 1890, fifteen years before the Die Brücke group formed in 1905, so he predates the movement. He is classed as a Post-Impressionist and a proto-expressionist, because he already used color and visible brushwork to carry feeling rather than describe appearance, and he directly influenced the German Expressionists.

What is neo-expressionism?

Neo-Expressionism was the revival of large, emotional, figurative painting in the late 1970s and 1980s, in reaction against minimalism and conceptual art. It appeared internationally, through Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer in Germany, the Transavanguardia group in Italy, and Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julian Schnabel in the United States.

How do you recognize an expressionist painting?

Look for visible unblended brushwork, often in thick impasto, non-naturalistic color chosen for emotional effect rather than accuracy, deliberately distorted proportion and perspective, compressed or ambiguous space, and visible evidence of speed such as drips and left-in corrections. Three of those five signals together are usually enough.
